Phil Laak Record Breaking Poker Endurance

Saturday, June 5th, 2010

You gotta love Phil Laak.  He brings exictement and fun to the game of poker. His antics at the table are well known, and this week’s antics are stunning and impressive. Phil’s doing some news-worthy self-promotion (unabomberpoker.com) and charitable work (Camp Sunshine) at the same time.

This week, Phil Laak is at the Bellagio trying to break the record for continuous play of Poker – the most hours playing poker in one session. I guess there’s two records – one official held by Larry Olmsted of 72 hours 2 minutes, and another held by Paul Zimbler of 78 hours 45 minutes. According to poker news sources, Laak is attempting to reach an even 80 hours.

Phil started on Wednesday and it is now Saturday (3:00 pm Vegas time). You can watch Phil’s progress here: http://acejones.com/unabomber-poker.htm. I saw Antonio Esfandiari there at one point. Seems to come and go from the table supporting his buddy Laak.

When I was writing this, he had already broken Larry Olmsed’s record and was at 75 hours with 5 more to go.

Phil has been tweeting throughout his challenge; follow him on Twitter: @RealPhilLaak

Kudos to Phil Laak’s marketing team. Very well put together and priceless timing.

Mike Matusow Hits Scotty Nguyen's Jaguar

Saturday, May 8th, 2010

Old news…but…very funny involving poker pros Scotty Nguyen, Gavin Smith and Mike Matusow.

I just found this video interview of Scotty Nguyen on Wicked Chops Poker. Footage from July 7, 2009 during the 2009 WSOP.  Standing with Gavin Smith, Scotty Nguyen tells the story of how his car was hit when he was driving home after his first day playing the 2009 WSOP 10K event.

Poker pro Mike Matusow received a text and a phone call at the same time. Distracted, his foot came off the brake, and hit another car. Yep, Scotty Nguyen’s ($150K) Jaguar!

I was thinking that Mike could be the new poster child for Oprah’s No Phone Zone campaign since he so candidly proved Oprah’s point about distracted driving.  On second thought, Mike wouldn’t measure up…Oprah is focusing on tragedies to prove her point, and in the Matusow-Nguyen case, no one was hurt and both Mike and Scotty seem cool about it.

Watch Gavin, Scotty and Mike each tell their perspective on what happened. Learn how easy going these guys are, and how paying your insurance bill – even just 2 days late – can bite you in the ass later on!

GusHansenTV.com

Saturday, March 27th, 2010

So last night I was listening to old podcasts (late 2008 – early 2009) from Two Plus Two . The hosts Mike and Adam were talking about how one of them had started watching Gus TV. He said it was fun and so addictive and warned listeners to not start watching unless you have a lot of time before you need to do something.

So, naturally, I had to try it out.  I surfed over to GusHansenTV.com, created an account, and downloaded Microsoft® Silverlight™ in order to give a look.

There’s Gus, right on my computer screen, talking directly to me about his thoughts as he plays two games of Omaha. (The two games are dispayed below Gus.) He’s talking about what he thinks the other player has, how he thinks the other player will react, how he thinks his hand will stand up, shoulda’s and coulda’s, and so on.

It is pretty facinating to have this up-close and personal look at what is going on in his mind right as he is playing. For someone who plays Omaha, I think it would be a good learning tool.

One example of the kinds of things that poker pros that we come to know through no limit hold’em tournaments  do in their spare time.
