2009 WSOP Main Event Results

I returned yesterday from my trip to Vegas to witness the 2009 WSOP Main Event Final Table. (It was AWESOME!) Apologies to all. I had expected to be blogging from Las Vegas, but, ran into technical difficulties and was unable to use my equipment. So, from a technical standpoint, let’s call it a “learning experience” and move on. I will be posting a log of the events with pics later.

2009 WSOP Main Event Payouts

$8,546,435 - Joseph Cada – starting stack = 13.215M chips
$5,182,601 - Darvin Moon – starting stack = 58.93M chips
$3,479,485 - Antoine Saout – starting stack = 9.5M chips
$2,502,787 – Eric Buchman – starting stack = 34.8M chips
$1,953,395 - Jeff Shulman – starting stack = 19.58M chips
$1,587,133 - Steven Begleiter – starting stack = 29.885M chips
$1,404,002 - Phil Ivey – starting stack = 9.765M chips
$1,300,228 - Kevin Schaffel – starting stack = 12.39M chips
$1,263,602 - James Akenhead – starting stack = 6.8M chips

The results turned out to be very different from what thousands of No Limit Texas Hold Em fans had predicted. Many had chosen Phil Ivey and Darvin Moon to be the winner of the 2009 WSOP Main Event. Indeed, Moon made it to the Final 2. Ivey, who busted out in 7th, wasn’t as fortunate.

How did PokaPaloma.com’s voters do?
The Lion’s share of voters at PokaPaloma.com chose Phil Ivey to win the 2009 WSOP Main Event. Darvin Moon received the second highest number of votes with Eric Buchman receiving the third highest. Curiously enough, Joseph Cada had received one vote. (I have to admit Joseph Cada was not even on my radar.)

In Las Vegas for the WSOP

Arrived in Las Vegas at 1:30 am Eastern time, 10:30 pm Pacific. Flew Jet Blue and flight was pleasant and uneventful. Arrived about 30 minutes earlier than expected. Took Gray’s shuttle to the hotel.

Checked into the Signature. Quickly washed up and went down to the MGM Grand. Checked out the poker room, picked up the no limit hold’em tournament schedule and structure sheet, got a snack and headed back to the room.

Action starts tomorrow at the RIO. It’s 1:45 am Vegas time. Got to get some sleep and prepare for a long day in line. Hopefully, I’ll get in to watch this first night of the 2009 WSOP Final Table.

Oh Yeah, and the room at the Signature = nothing less than awesome. Junior suite in Tower 1 facing the strip…with a balcony. I’ll take some pics and upload tomorrow.

ESPN Airs Final Pre-Final Table WSOP ME Program

Tonight ESPN airs its final installment of the 2009 WSOP Main Event from 9 – 11PM. This is the last build up to the final table. Tonight we learn the twists of fate and master plays that brought each of the November Nine to the final table.

The November Nine play at the Final Table starting in 4 DAYS… The action begins Saturday. The final 2 will meet on Monday, and the final broadcast will be Tuesday at 9PM Eastern time on ESPN. The Nov. 10 broadcast will highlight the Saturday and Monday activities.

2009 WSOP Final Table Schedule

Finally, the details for the 2009 WSOP Final Table have been posted. We already know that the event will be held at the Penn & Teller Theatre at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.

Play resumes SATURDAY, Nov. 7th at NOON (Pacific). The session will be a long one because the November Nine will play down until there are 2 players left (WSOP website says, “as long as it takes“).

The remaining 2 will play heads up starting at 10PM (Pacific) on Monday, Nov. 9th and continue until their is a winner.

Portions of Saturday and Monday’s play will be televised in a 2-hour long special on ESPN TUESDAY, Nov. 10th at 9:00PM Eastern Time.

Working out the final details of my trip. Needed this info to complete that. Can’t wait! Want to leave in the morning!

2009 WSOP on TV Tuesday

As we quickly approach the 2009 WSOP Main Event Final Table, ESPN continues its coverage of the Main Event action in Las Vegas last July that lead up to it.

Tuesday, Oct 27, 2009 9 – 11 pm – This is a two-hour installment of Main Event coverage. Starting with 27 players and playing down to ? I’m going to go out on a limb and say…18.

There is one more show next Tuesday, then the Main Event Final Table November 10.

WSOP Coverage by ESPN This Tuesday

Phil Hellmuth Hired to Coach One of the November Nine

9-24-08 Forbes.com posted an Associated Press article by Oskar Garcia entitled Final table player hires Hellmuth as WSOP coach.

Mr. Garcia reports that Jeff Shulman, President of Card Player Media and part-time poker pro has hired Phil Hellmuth to train him for the 2009 WSOP Main Event Final Table bout to be held at the Rio in Las Vegas November 7 – 10, 2009.

According to Mr. Garcia, Shulman has cashed in 15 previous events for a total of $289,551 in winnings.

The payouts for the November Nine start at $1,263,602 and increase to $8,546,435 for the winner of the 2009 WSOP Main Event. [2009 WSOP November Nine payout amounts] Shulman will make a little over 4.3x his total earnings just for sitting at the table.

Shulman has his work cut out for him. Phil Ivey is in the field, and, there are three other players with 10K to 40K more in starting chips waiting to defend their positions. Here’s a reminder of the players and their chip stacks – 2009 WSOP Main Event Final Table Players .

And… I’m confused. Remember that Shulman caused controvery during the Summer at the 2009 WSOP when he said that he would throw the trophy in the garbage if he won. Here’s a quote from a Wicked Chops Poker article in July…

We had been hearing from multiple sources for days that Shulman is saying that if he were to win the 2009 WSOP Main Event, he’d renounce the bracelet as he believes that Harrah’s has treated his magazine unfairly in recent years. We just asked Shulman on the first break if this was true, to which he replied, “If by renounce it you mean throw it in the garbage, then yes.”

So, why is he trying so hard to win? So bitter an individual? a drama queen? a publicity stunt? or has he had a change of heart?
