2010 WSOP Online

Friday, May 21st, 2010

The 2010 WSOP begins THIS Thursday. Can I be any more excited?  I don’t think so. It’ll get a little crazy here. Trying to monitor Twitter, to find out which live feeds will be made available and to post them and watch those with a 3 hour difference (ah…sleep…not for a while), to post the latest news, and oh, yeah, do my “real” job.

The Action
Many poker pros tweet about their progress.  If you want to follow your favorite poker pro, be sure to check out my post, “Poker Pros on Twitter“.  You can help –> If your favorite poker pro is missing and you have the Twitter information, be sure to leave it in the comments section and I will add it asap.

Also follow WSOP Communications Director Seth Palansky on Twitter @WSOPRGUY , staff @WSOP, WSOP Tournament Director, Jack Effel @WSOPTD. Watch YouTube for video: http://www.youtube.com/WSOP and watch the WSOP Fan page.

The Players
If you want to learn more about each player, I recommend the poker player bios at Cardplayer.com, WSOP.com and Bluff Magazine  (looks like it is the same as WSOP.com)

2010 WSOP Starts Soon

Saturday, May 8th, 2010

WOO HOO. It’s that time of year again. The 2010 WSOP starts Friday, May 28 and runs until Saturday, July 17th when the Main Event will play down to the November Nine.

2010 WSOP will be held at the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino. This year’s WSOP playing surface will cover 120,000 square feet of space and include 377 tables.

I can’t wait to watch the live action that will be streamed (looking for that schedule and will post it), and follow the live blogs at bluffmagazine.com, pokerati.com, and more.

Having been spoiled by the timely updates and announcements from Jeffrey Pollack the former WSOP Commissioner (who retired from the post at the end of the 2009 WSOP), I have been searching for whom in the WSOP I might follow this year.  You would think WSOP Communications Director Seth Palansky would be a good choice. Turns out Seth’s not much of a communicator – at least not online.  Huh? What are we suppose to read the newspaper? Maybe he’s practicing up, so, here’s his online social media accounts in case he comes up to speed in a couple of weeks. Seth Palansky on Twitter: @WSOPRGUYSeth Palansky on Facebook; Seth Palansky on LinkedIn. Maybe Seth will read this and provide us with the social media accounts of this year’s point person. Seth?

Okay, so back to the WSOP… The 2010 WSOP action will pause for 4 months, then resume with the final table of the 10K Main Event being played by the November Nine November 6 – 9, 2010. Presuming that the 2010 ME final table schedule follows that of the 2009 ME final table, the November Nine will begin play around noon on Saturday, November 6 and play down – whatever time it takes - to the final two. Reaching the final two will probably happen sometime on Sunday the 7th. The final two will rest and resume play at 10:00 pm on Monday, November 8, when play is expected to continue until and be completed on Tuesday, November 9.

Need to check out some links above, but, need to go right now. Will update later.

Harrah's Selling the Rio – What's the Impact on the WSOP?

Saturday, May 1st, 2010

I read this week that Harrah’s is selling the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. That got my attention because I feel an attachment to the Rio as the home of the WSOP, and, after all, I spent some of the funnest hours of my life last year attending the final table held at the Rio.

After further research on the sale, I learned that

  • Harrah’s is “willing” to sell the Rio
  • Some speculate that Harrah’s has been willing to sell the Rio for some time, and that it was part of the original plan to hold the WSOP there for only one year
  • The Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino is valued at $500M
  • Harrah’s purchased the Rio in 1999 for $888M
  • Players close to the WSOP events are speculating that
    • The sale of the Rio in 2010 would have no impact on the location of the 2010 WSOP
    • The 2011 WSOP (and beyond) would be held at Caesar’s or Planet Hollywood
    • The Rio’s convention space is appox. 160,000 square feet and Caesars’ convention space is closer to 300,000 square feet

So I’m concerned from a nostalgic standpoint. Not really keen on having the WSOP at Caesars – where do you park? Having it at Planet Hollywood might be interesting… feed off the draw of the young crowd to PH…dramatically increase the number of runners.

2010 WSOP Tournament of Champions

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010

Did you know that you have a voice in who will play in the WSOP Tournament of Champions?  Well, you do – and – you get to choose 20 poker pros!  That’s a good number for each person. My only regret is that I could not choose 25! As I went through the list of poker pros, I had to replace some that I had chosen to accommodate others that I felt definitely should compete in the tournament. I guess that’s the point – choose the poker pros who deserve  it!

WSOP Tournament of Champions VotingHere’s the list of poker pros I chose; some because they clearly deserve it from a career standpoint, some because I like the way they play and how they conduct themselves at the table, and some for nostalgic reasons.

After voting, I saw the Top 50 Poker Pros who had been voted for thus far. I was pleased to see that 16 of the 20 I had chosen were on the list. The list is a dynamic list that changes each time a vote is cast… so that will change.

Annie Duke, Mike Sexton, Joe Cada, Mike Matusow, and Barry Shulman are already in, so, are not included in the list of poker pros to vote for.

It’s a really simple process.

  1. You go to the tournament voting website and register to vote (valid e-mail address is required).
  2. WSOP sends an e-mail with a confirmation code.
  3. You click the link in the confirmation e-mail and the list of poker pros displays in the center window.
  4. Pros are listed in alphabetic order and you can select the letter of the alphabet by clicking below the list window.  Some letters have 2 and 3 pages, so, look for that. (I missed it the first time through.)

Registering for the 2010 WSOP

Friday, December 18th, 2009

Registration for the 2010 WSOP is already open – online and at the Rio. And what are they doing to avoid the debacle of turning away players from the Main Event like in 2009?  Nothing! Here’s what has been posted at WSOP (bolding added by me):

Registration for all bracelet events will remain open until the start of the third level (approximately 2 hours, 20 minutes after start time) – or until all available seats have sold. Pre-registration for the 2010 WSOP is now available on-site at the Main Cage of the Rio in Las Vegas and online through www.wsop.com. This is the earliest registration has ever opened, as players now have more than five months to register for the first event, and more than six months to register for the Main Event.

Players are encouraged to register in advance to avoid being shutout of their favorite events…

Players wanting to play in the 2010 WSOP Main Event have 6 months to register. Guess that’s fair enough!
What about you? What 2010 WSOP events will you be playing in?  Use comments to tell us.

Waiting to get into the WSOP ME Final Table

Tuesday, November 24th, 2009

Waiting to get into the 2009 WSOP Main Event Final Table… When you first arrive, you’re anxious and shift your weight from foot to foot to expend some of the energy. Then you start talking with those around you, then the poker pros start to arrive, and you turn into a real tourist!!!  Here’s some of the photos that I got of poker pros and one very special couple… Phil Ivey’s #1 fans…

Mel and Pat Humphrey stood near the entranceway for quite a while and took photos with all the spectators that wanted to pose with them.

Wendy Moon, Darvin’s wife, was very visible throughout the day in the shops, eateries, halls, and Penn & Teller Theater (of course) and very friendly and accomodating to the fans. Here she poses in front of a banner of the great Johnny Moss, a multi-time champion of the WSOP. Banners of former WSOP Champions lined the (waiting) hallway of the Rio.

Greg Raymer walked down the very long line of spectators several times. He was super friendly and very accommodating to the fans – signing autographs left and right.

11/07/09 11:14am - Greg Raymer signing autographs.

Phil Gordon was also generous with his time and walked the line of spectators waiting to get into the WSOP a couple of times, stopping along the way to sign autographs.

While we were waiting in line, one of the guys in front of me was standing reading Phil Gordon’s Little Green Book of Poker. Suddenly he realized that Phil was in the area…

11/07/09 11:35am - Phil Gordon signs a copy of his book, Phil Gordon's Little Green Book of Poker, for the guy in front of me. The guy asked, "Hey, Phil will you sign my book?" To which Phil replied, "Your book? I'll sign your copy of MY book for you."...and there were laughs all around.

Getting into the WSOP for the Final Two

Saturday, November 21st, 2009

Getting into the WSOP covered getting into the WSOP the first day of play, Saturday, November 7, 2009 when the November Nine met at the Main Event Final Table and played down to 2. They started at Noon on Saturday and played until 5:57AM Sunday morning.

This post covers getting into the WSOP’s second day of Final Table play, Monday, November 9, 2009 when the final 2 played for the championship of Event 57, the $10,000 No Limit Hold’em tournament of the 2009 WSOP.

Just like Saturday, getting into day two of the WSOP Main Event Final Table was a matter of time. How much you want to witness the final 2 = the amount of time you invest in standing in line. All you need to do is get to the Penn & Teller Theater at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino at a time that will get you into a nice place in line.

Schedule

Monday, Nov.9, 10:00pm – Final 2 play for the title

8:30 PM Monday, 11/09/09
Arrived at the Penn & Teller Theater at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino. Got in line. This time, I was not in as good a position as on Saturday. I was in line down in the rotunda portion of the hallway about 150 feet from the entrance, and unlike Saturday were the line cut diagonally across the rotunda, spectators were lined up against the walls (meaning many more were in line). There were about 70 – 80 more people in front of me. It was hard to tell with more accuracy because the spectators were very spread out.

Monday, Nov. 10, 2009 8:44PM - Spectators ahead of me to witness the 2009 WSOP Final 2

Monday, Nov. 10, 2009 8:44PM - Spectators ahead of me to witness the 2009 WSOP Final 2

9:30 PM Monday, 11/09/09
Line begins moving slowly, advancing about 15 – 20 people at a time.

10:07 PM Monday, 11/09/09
I am seated in the first balcony (mezzanine of Penn & Teller Theater). View was excellent because there were not as many camera people nor camera apparatus blocking the spectators’ side of the table.

Both players are on stage. Darvin Moon is signing autographs on the left front of the stage and Joe Cada is on the right side of the stage talking with supporters decked out in their yellow long-sleeve “Cada” t-shirts. Curiously enough, Davin Moon is wearing a yellow shirt.  Hummm… earlier in the day, I had read an article in the Las Vegas Review-Journal which quoted  Moon as having said, “…Cada is favored“. I’m wondering if Moon was trying to send a message with his choice of tops.

Final hand is played and 21-year-old Joe Cada emerges as the champion of the 2009 WSOP Main Event. Cada had 9d 9c. Moon had Qd Jd. Board was 8c 2c 7s kh 7c.

Getting into the WSOP

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009

I planned the trip to Las Vegas to attend the 2009 WSOP Main Event Final Table back in late July after having followed the WSOP events online  from May 27th – July 15th.  Before booking the trip I did research on how to get into the WSOP. The general concensus was that you just had to show up and wait in line.  And so, it turned out to be.

Getting into the WSOP was easy. Finding information about the schedule was a challenge. The Final Table was scheduled for November 7 – 10. As the date approached, I visited the WSOP website  daily looking for the schedule. I asked around at the poker forums and learned that there were many of us waiting for the schedule to be posted. I finally found it at the WSOP website October 30, 2009. The post was dated October 19th. Hummm… I had scoured the site. WSOP did a site upgrade around that time, so, I think it had been posted on a development site and then made live when the upgrade happened. Anyway – if your planning on going, looks like the schedule is posted 1 - 2 weeks prior to the date of the Final Table

Schedule was:

Saturday, Nov. 7 – 9 players play down to 2 starting at Noon
Monday, Nov.9 – 2 players play for the title starting at 10:00pm

Screens were mounted in the hallways along the top end of the waiting line at the Rio

9:45 AM Saturday, 11/07/09
Arrived at the Penn & Teller Theater at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino. Got in line. In about 200th spot.

My waiting spot was diagonally across from the Theater’s entranceway to the right. I was able to see many poker pros enter. Some stopped for photos and to sign autographs (kudos to Greg Raymer and Phil Gordon who were really generous with their time) and others, well, didn’t have the time (who else but Phil Hellmuth – a true Brat). I didn’t get photos of everyone, but, I’ll post the ones that I did get later.

11:45 AM Saturday, 11/07/09
There was movement in the line ahead of me. Nothing serious, but, people were slowly moving up. We didn’t know whether they were being seated or groups gave up and left. Then another movement, and another, say 10 – 15 people at a time.
There are really two lines. The line I was in “graduated” to another line across the hall. Before crossing the hall, I was given a red ticket – like a standard raffle ticket.
Couple Proudly Displaying Red Tickets

The couple I spent most of the day chatting with proudly display their Red Tickets

When I got to the other side of the hall, I got in that line. 10 - 15 people were seated at a time. Before getting into the about-to-be seated line, the ticket was taken and my hand was stamped.  I was escorted to a section of the Theater and chose a seat.

Saturday 12:28PM spectators ahead of me in the Red Ticket line. Red arrow points to doors of the Penn & Teller Theater. Just a few more feet

Saturday 12:28PM spectators ahead of me in the Red Ticket line. Red arrow points to doors of the Penn & Teller Theater. Just a few more feet.

So once the line started moving at 11:45 AM, it kept moving with small delays in between. I was in a seat in the second balcony (great view) by 12:30 PM and the ceremony started at 12:40 PM. (Yep, later than the scheduled time.) I was seated behind three rows of Begleiter fans all dressed with their Begs Begs Begs t-shirts.

What do you do while waiting in line to get into the WSOP? Take pictures of the poker pros arriving. Here’s photos of some of the poker pros I saw while in line.

Oh yeah – and I made it into ESPN’s coverage of the 2009 Main Event Final Table.  Here’s a YouTube video of the intro. I’m in the section where Lon McEachern says that “thousands waited in line…”.

7:00 – 9:00 PM Saturday, 11/07/09
Players were given 2 hours (7PM – 9PM) .  The dinner break was interesting. The Theater was emptied. When you return from dinner, you get back in line. There are a number of lines and the one that you wait in depends on the kind of credential you have. If you are a member of a player’s support team or staff or the press, you have a wrist band or lanyard with photo id, and you go right through. If you are the general public with a stamp on your hand, you wait in one line. If you are general public without a stamp on your hand (i.e. never made it into the Theater earlier), you get into a different line. Once all the credentialed folks are seated, the stamped hand spectators are seated, then the never-been-stamped spectators are seated. During the day, I had a seat in the second balcony. After dinner, I was seated in the first balcony…considered a “promotion” I suppose, but the view was not as good, so I was glad I had binoculars.

9:20 PM Saturday, 11/07/09
Poker commissioner, Jeffrey Pollack introduced Mike Sexton the only 2009 inductee into the Poker Hall of Fame. Joining him on stage were former Poker Hall of Famers Doyle Brunson, Jack Binion, Dewey Tomko, Phil Hellmuth, Billy Baxter and T.J. Cloutier.

9:30 PM Saturday, 11/07/09
Play resumed.

11:30 PM Saturday, 11/07/09
Left for the day. I had been bobbing my head since 11:00 PM and getting confused about the hands. Since the play was going so slow, I decided to call it a day and return early in the a.m. to catch the rest of the action. Little did I know that all the action would happen between 12:00 AM and 6:00 AM… and then there were two, Cada and Moon.

TIPs

If you are going to Las Vegas from any distance, make sure you get plenty of sleep the days prior to the WSOP Final Table. I had flown in the day before, got only 4 hours sleep, hadn’t adjusted to the 3-hour time difference, and then couldn’t see straight at 11:30 PM the night the 9 played down to 2. Had I flown in a day earlier and got a decent amount of sleep, I would not have missed any of the action.

Have the taxi take you around the back of the Rio to the Penn & Teller Theater entrance. The waiting line is just inside. It’ll cost you about $1.00 more, but saves on steps and improves your position in line since you’ll get there sooner. (Taxi from the MGM Grand to the Penn & Teller Theater was $16.00 including tip.)

Eat a hearty breakfast before arriving. Bring a light snack and plenty of water.  Water at the closest place (Starbucks) was $5.00 a bottle.

Bring binoculars so that you can see close ups of players’ actions and faces.

Bring a camera that does not require a flash. No flash photography allowed. They announced it several times during the afternoon session. Then again during the night session. Then they announced, “This is the final warning about flash photography”. Then they escorted those who broke the rule out the door.

2009 WSOP Main Event Results

Sunday, November 15th, 2009

I returned yesterday from my trip to Vegas to witness the 2009 WSOP Main Event Final Table. (It was AWESOME!) Apologies to all. I had expected to be blogging from Las Vegas, but, ran into technical difficulties and was unable to use my equipment. So, from a technical standpoint, let’s call it a “learning experience” and move on. I will be posting a log of the events with pics later.

2009 WSOP Main Event Payouts

  1. $8,546,435 - Joseph Cada – starting stack = 13.215M chips
  2. $5,182,601 - Darvin Moon – starting stack = 58.93M chips
  3. $3,479,485 - Antoine Saout – starting stack = 9.5M chips
  4. $2,502,787 – Eric Buchman – starting stack = 34.8M chips
  5. $1,953,395 - Jeff Shulman – starting stack = 19.58M chips
  6. $1,587,133 -  Steven Begleiter – starting stack = 29.885M chips
  7. $1,404,002 - Phil Ivey – starting stack = 9.765M chips
  8. $1,300,228 - Kevin Schaffel – starting stack = 12.39M chips
  9. $1,263,602 - James Akenhead – starting stack = 6.8M chips

The results turned out to be very different from what thousands of No Limit Texas Hold Em fans had predicted. Many had chosen Phil Ivey and Darvin Moon to be the winner of the 2009 WSOP Main Event. Indeed, Moon made it to the Final 2. Ivey, who busted out in 7th, wasn’t as fortunate.

How did PokaPaloma.com’s voters do?
The Lion’s share of voters at PokaPaloma.com chose Phil Ivey to win the 2009 WSOP Main Event. Darvin Moon received the second highest number of votes with Eric Buchman receiving the third highest. Curiously enough, Joseph Cada had received one vote. (I have to admit Joseph Cada was not even on my radar.)
